Reading is one of the essential skills of life. However, for many children learning to read is a difficult experience and one fraught with confusion, anxiety and distress for both the child and the parent.
English learning is broken down into three main categories:
Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
At Littleover Learning Hub we begin by assessing a student’s Reading and Comprehension abilities. By Reading we mean the process known as decoding – reading words by sight or using phonics, whereby the meaning is irrelevant. Comprehension assesses the ability to understand and analyse a passage of written text.
To support the learning of English, we use a multi-sensory approach to teaching reading to our students with an emphasis on phonics and sight word recognition. Through the teaching of decoding, vocabulary building and word knowledge we are able to build on reading comprehension skills and help your child develop the reading skills needed at their level in the classroom.
Individual learning plans and a wide variety of techniques covers the following aspects of the English language:
- Phonics
- Early Reading
- Comprehension
- Grammar
- Sentence development
- Handwriting

“Gesine supported my son, aged 10, for eight months. He attended classes to improve in all aspects of English, gain confidence and work independently. Gesine was brilliant with him, she was kind and patient. Now he just gets on with it! We are so pleased and he is a much happier young man. I know he will be welcomed back should the need arise for Gesine to work her magic again!”
